Niles Caulder, known as The Chief, is a prominent figure in the DC Universe, primarily associated with the Doom Patrol. He is a brilliant scientist and inventor, possessing a genius-level intellect but is physically confined to a wheelchair.

Caulder's backstory involves a relentless pursuit of scientific advancement, often at the expense of ethical considerations. He believes in the potential of humanity and seeks to push its boundaries, even through unorthodox and dangerous methods.

He engineered the "accidents" that transformed the original members of the Doom Patrol – Robotman, Elasti-Girl, and Negative Man – giving them their extraordinary abilities while simultaneously leaving them ostracized from society. Caulder saw these transformations as a means to create a team capable of protecting the innocent and battling the bizarre threats that normal humans couldn't face.

Despite his seemingly benevolent intentions, The Chief is a morally ambiguous character.
